Resolution to Manipur Ethnic Unrest Likely in 2-3 Months: CM Biren Singh

Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Friday declared that the Modi 3.0 government will soon implement an action plan to address the ongoing ethnic unrest in the state, with a potential solution expected within the next two to three months. This statement was made during the International Yoga Day 2024 celebration at Khuman Lampak Indoor Hall, Imphal.

Singh noted a reduction in violence across Manipur, although some sporadic incidents occurred in fringe areas. He stated that the reopening of schools, government establishments, markets, and businesses indicates a return to normalcy. The chief minister highlighted that the most intense period of crisis lasted 6-7 months, despite unrest persisting for 14 months.

Addressing the recent violence in Jiribam, Singh attributed it to inadequate security measures but assured that law and order have improved following the redeployment of security personnel previously assigned to Lok Sabha election duties.

Fresh violence erupted in Jiribam after a 59-year-old farmer from Sorok Atingbi Khunou village, near Assam’s Cachar district, was killed on June 6.

The Modi 3.0 government has prioritised resolving the Manipur violence, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah conducting a high-level security meeting to gather comprehensive information and formulate an action plan within the next few months.

The ethnic conflict between Meiteis and Kukis, which began in May 2023, has resulted in over 200 deaths and displaced more than 50,000 people, many of whom remain in relief camps.
