Doctor Among Those Arrested in Connection to ‘Friends’ Actor Matthew Perry’s Death: Reports

Los Angeles: US media reported Thursday that at least one person has been arrested in connection with the ketamine overdose that led to the death of “Friends” actor Matthew Perry last year. NBC, citing law enforcement sources, confirmed the arrest, while TMZ reported “multiple” arrests, including that of a doctor, as authorities investigate how Perry obtained the drug.

Matthew Perry, famous for his role as Chandler Bing on “Friends” from 1994-2004, was discovered unresponsive in his pool in October of last year at the age of 54. His sudden death triggered a global wave of grief among fans and colleagues.

An autopsy revealed that Perry died from “the acute effects of ketamine,” a controlled substance he was reportedly using in supervised therapy. Although only small amounts were found in his stomach, a significant level of ketamine was detected in his bloodstream.

The focus of the investigation has been on how Perry, who had allegedly not attended a supervised infusion session for several days, obtained the drug. In May, Los Angeles police confirmed they were probing his death. TMZ further reported that “at least one doctor has been arrested, along with several dealers who facilitated the delivery of ketamine to Perry.”

Ketamine, commonly used as an anaesthetic by doctors and veterinarians, has also been explored for its potential in treating depression. However, it is often misused illicitly for its hallucinogenic effects.

“Friends,” a beloved sitcom that followed six New Yorkers navigating life and relationships, garnered a massive global audience, making its cast, including Perry, household names. Despite his comedic brilliance and success, Perry struggled with addiction to drugs and alcohol, a battle that shadowed much of his life.
