Mumbai Attack Mastermind Hafiz Saeed’s Son Defeated, Former PM Nawaz Sharif Wins in Pak Polls

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif won his constituency with 1,71,024 votes, against Yasmin Rashid.

The counting of votes in Pakistan is underway. In the initial phase of the counting of votes, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN), headed by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, and Imran Khan’s PTI-backed candidates seem to be in a close race for power.

So far, results on 53 of the 265 contested seats have been announced officially by the Pakistan Election Commission.

The major political parties in the contest are Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN), headed by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Jailed Imran Khan’s party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), led by Benazir Bhutto’s son Bilawal Bhutto.

In total, 266 National Assembly in Pakistan seats were up for grabs out of 336. Polling was deferred in one seat after a candidate was killed in a gun attack in Bajaur. Another 60 seats are reserved for women and 10 for minorities and are allotted to the winning parties based on proportional representation.
