Odisha People to Miss Watching Supermoon Due to Rains

Bhubaneswar: While sky-gazers in other parts of the country will see a supermoon on Tuesday (August 1), the people of Odisha are expected to miss it because of rains and cloudy sky. As per the weather forecast, Odisha’s sky may not get clear on Tuesday.

There will be another supermoon this month on August 30, marking a rare phenomenon of blue moon. The last time two full supermoons appeared in the same month was in 2018 – and it won’t happen again until 2037.

During the supermoon phenomenon, the moon appears up to 14 per cent bigger and 30 per cent brighter compared to its usual brightness.

According to the American space agency NASA, the Supermoon phenomenon occurs when the moon’s orbit is closest to Earth, and at the same time, it should be a full moon.

The term supermoon was coined in 1979.

According to space.com, the August 1 supermoon will rise around 12.01 am IST on August 2, and it sets at 2.41 pm IST on August 2.

The moon also appears magnified when it rises or sets on the horizon during the supermoon.
