Odisha CM Announces Resumption of Potato Supply from West Bengal

Bhubaneswar/New Delhi: A looming potato crisis in Odisha has been averted following swift action by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. The price of the essential commodity had skyrocketed due to a disruption in potato supply from neighbouring West Bengal.

The Chief Minister met with his West Bengal counterpart, Mamata Banerjee, in New Delhi on the sidelines of the NITI Aayog meeting on Friday. The urgent discussion focused on the severe impact of the potato supply shortage on Odisha’s consumer market.

Following the meeting, Majhi announced on X that potato exports from West Bengal had resumed. The Odisha government has also been actively monitoring the situation with Supplies Minister Krushna Chandra Patra inspecting state godowns.

The crisis had escalated with hundreds of potato-laden trucks being stranded at the Odisha-Bengal border due to an alleged export ban by the West Bengal government.

The subsequent scarcity led to a sharp increase in potato prices across Odisha.

The state government has assured the public of taking necessary steps to stabilise potato prices and ensure adequate supply in the coming days.
