No-Confidence Motion Against Modi Government Defeated in Lok Sabha

New Delhi: The no-confidence motion presented by the opposition alliance “INDIA” in the Lok Sabha was defeated in a voice vote on Thursday. The motion, led by Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and Bharat Rashtra Samithi, was in response to the Modi government’s handling of the Manipur violence.

Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla accepted the motion last week, leading to a debate from August 8 to August 10.

Key figures, including Rahul Gandhi, Amit Shah, among others, weighed in on the motion.

This marks the second time Prime Minister Narendra Modi has faced a no-confidence motion; the first, in 2018, was over granting special status to Andhra Pradesh.

The NDA, with a substantial majority of 331 MPs, including 303 from the BJP, holds a significant advantage. In contrast, the opposition bloc “INDIA” has 144 MPs, while unaligned parties account for 70 in the Lower House.
