Same-Sex Marriage Verdict: SC Allows Unmarried Couples to Adopt Children

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday abolished the Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA) regulation on child adoption and allowed unmarried couples to adopt children.

The Supreme Court observed that it is wrong to assume that only heterosexual couples can be good parents. The bench of the apex court struck down CARA regulation restricting unmarried couples from adoption.

The Supreme Court stated this while is delivering its much-anticipated judgment on pleas seeking legal validation for same-sex marriage today. On May 11, a five-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and including Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, S Ravindra Bhat, Hima Kohli, and P S Narasimha, reserved its verdict on the pleas after a marathon hearing of 10 days.
