Shubman Gill RULED OUT! BCCI Provides Concerning Update Ahead of Afghanistan Clash

New Delhi: Star Indian opener Shubman Gill, is set to miss the team’s second Cricket World Cup 2023 match against Afghanistan due to a suspected dengue fever, as confirmed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Gill had previously missed India’s opening match against Australia in Chennai due to a fever.

In the absence of Gill, Ishan Kishan replaced him as the opening batsman alongside India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, in the match against Australia. The BCCI released a statement, stating that Gill would not be traveling with the team to Delhi on 9th October 2023 and would continue to stay in Chennai under medical supervision. This means he will also miss the crucial encounter against Afghanistan on 11th October.

While addressing the situation, Rohit Sharma mentioned in a pre-match press conference before the Australia game that Gill’s health was the concern rather than an injury, and they were closely monitoring his progress. Gill’s absence from the team is expected to have Ishan Kishan open with Rohit Sharma against Afghanistan, where Kishan will aim to improve upon his performance from the Australia game where he failed to score.

Additionally, with Shubman Gill out of the lineup, Shreyas Iyer is likely to feature in the middle-order for India in the second World Cup game against Afghanistan. In the opening match against Australia, Shreyas Iyer was dismissed for a duck. Despite these setbacks, the Indian team remains confident and well-prepared for the World Cup, focusing on their skills and team performance.
