US Firm to Set Up Silicon Carbide Plant in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Silicon Power Group of the United States is planning to establish a silicon carbide (SiC) manufacturing plant in Odisha at an investment of Rs 1000 crore. Silicon carbide is the base material for semiconductors.

This proposed unit in Odisha will be set up by RiR Power Electronics, a subsidiary of the Silicon Power Group in India. The Odisha unit will be a 150mm silicon carbide manufacturing facility.

The founder of the company, Dr. Harshad Mehta, has submitted a Letter of Intent regarding it to the Odisha delegation, now on an official visit to the US.

This will be a first-of-its-kind manufacturing facility in Odisha which will serve as a testament to the efforts that Odisha Government has put in to develop a semiconductor ecosystem in the state, said a release from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO).

The company has committed to start operations in the next 18 to 24 months.

Silicon Power is a pioneer and leader in medium voltage, sub-cycle switching technology and solutions. Its offerings include the design and manufacturing of leading-edge Si and SiC devices and modules through its US subsidiary SiCamore Semi and large industrial/utility power systems through another US subsidiary, the Innova Power Solutions Group.

It operates in India through its subsidiary, RiR Power Electronics.
