Yashasvi Jaiswal Makes History, Breaks 147-Year-Old Record in 1st Test vs Bangladesh

Chennai: Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal made history during Day 1 of the first Test match against Bangladesh in Chennai on Thursday. Despite India losing wickets, Jaiswal’s resilient half-century stood out against a challenging bowling attack. His knock not only steadied India but also made him the first batter in the 147-year history of Test cricket to score over 750 runs in his first 10 home innings. Jaiswal surpassed the previous record of 747 runs set by West Indies’ George Headley in 1935.

Top Test Runs After First 10 Innings at Home
1. 755* – Yashasvi Jaiswal (India)
2. 747 – George Headley (West Indies)
3. 743 – Javed Miandad (Pakistan)
4. 687 – Dave Houghton (Zimbabwe)
5. 680 – Sir Viv Richards (West Indies)

Bangladesh’s fast bowler Hasan Mahmud dismantled India’s top order with four wickets, reducing the hosts to 176/6 by tea. Mahmud’s performance validated captain Najmul Hossain Shanto’s decision to bowl first in overcast conditions. He took three early wickets and one more post-lunch, including the dismissals of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, both scoring just six runs each.

At the end of Day 1, Ravindra Jadeja (86*) and Ravichandran Ashwin (102*) were at the crease, reviving India from a perilous 144/6. Earlier, Jaiswal’s 56 and a 62-run stand with Rishabh Pant, playing his first Test since his 2022 car accident, gave India some momentum. Pant made 39 before Hasan ended the partnership. Nahid Rana dismissed Jaiswal, while KL Rahul fell to Mehidy Hasan Miraz for 16.

Bangladesh, fresh off a 2-0 series sweep against Pakistan, are hunting their first-ever Test win against India. The second and final Test will begin on September 27 in Kanpur.
