Bill to Ban TikTok Passed by US House

The US House of Representatives passed a bill to ban TikTok with an overwhelming majority. This bill will force the Chinese owner of the popular App to divest or get banned from the United States.

The bill got 352 votes in favour and 65 against. Now the fate of the bill will be decided as some key Senate members are apprehensive of making such a drastic move against an App that has 170 million US users.

President Joe Biden will sign the bill, known officially as the “Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act,” into law if it comes to his desk, the White House has said.

As per the bill, to escape the ban order, TikTok’s parent company ByteDance requires to sell the App within 180 days. Otherwise, it will be barred from the Apple and Google app stores across the US.

TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew is now in Washington, trying to gather support to stop the bill.

China warned on Wednesday that the move will “inevitably come back to bite the United States”.
