Centre Cracks Down on Sale, Breeding of 23 Dog Breeds Deemed Dangerous

New Delhi: In response to a surge in pet dog attacks across the nation, the central government has instructed states and Union Territories to prohibit the sale and breeding of 23 breeds of aggressive dogs. This directive aims to enhance public safety and prevent further incidents.

The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying has acted upon numerous representations from citizens, forums, and animal welfare organizations, advocating for the ban on certain dog breeds as pets due to safety concerns.

The identified breeds, including popular ones like Pitbull Terrier, American Bulldog, Rottweiler, and Mastiffs, are deemed ferocious and potentially dangerous to human lives. The government advises sterilization for existing pets of these breeds to curb further breeding.

The banned breeds, encompassing mixed and crossbreeds, cover a wide range including Pitbull Terrier, Tosa Inu, American Staffordshire Terrier, and others. The prohibition extends to import, breeding, selling as pets, and any other purposes.
