8 Rajasthan Cops Charged with Murder After Rape Accused Dies in Custody

Jaipur: Eight policemen, including a Station House Officer (SHO), have been charged for allegedly beating a rape accused to death, according to officials on Monday. The incident occurred on May 29 under the Mandrela police limits, leading to the SHO’s suspension.

The victim, 30-year-old Gaurav Sharma from Kotputli, was arrested in Jaipur on May 24 for a rape case filed at Mandrela police station. After being remanded to police custody for five days, Sharma’s health suddenly deteriorated on May 29. He was rushed to a hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

Additional Superintendent of Police Pushpendra Singh Rathore stated that the deceased’s family refused to claim the body, demanding that a murder case be filed against the SHO and the other involved officers. After a late-night meeting between senior police and administrative officials and the family on Sunday, a murder case was registered against eight officers, including SHO Ravindra Kumar, who has been suspended.

The body, which had been held in a mortuary since Sharma’s death, was released to his family after a postmortem examination. The police are currently investigating the case.
