Murderer Of Two Australian Women in 1977 Arrested In Italy After 47 Yrs

A 65-year-old man was arrested in Italy’s Rome over the  1977 murder of two women in their home in Melbourne, Australia.

According to Australian police, the bodies of Suzanne Armstrong, 27, and Susan Bartlett, 28, were discovered at their house in Melbourne, on January 13, 1977. They had multiple stab wounds and Armstrong had been raped.

The 47-year-old crime, known as the Easey Street murders in Australia was one of longest and most serious cold cases of the country.

The suspect, a dual Greek-Australian citizen, had been living in Greece. He was finally arrested Thursday in the Italian capital under an Interpol red notice.

A report in Melbourne’s The Age newspaper, the police had decided to check the DNA of all 131 people named in the original police file.

The suspect was on that list and had agreed to undergo a DNA test but instead fled to Greece in 2017. He was linked to the crime by the DNA of a close relative, the report said.
