Kolkata: In a successful operation, the Special Task Force (STF) of the West Bengal Police apprehended a railway employee for trafficking narcotics from the northeastern states. The arrest of 39-year-old Raju Mondal yielded a significant seizure of 9.081 kg of opium, valued at approximately Rs 90 lakh in the market.

Acting on specific intelligence, the STF team set up a trap near Nasra High School in Nadia district on March 28th, leading to the arrest of Mondal, a group-D employee of the Railways. Investigations revealed Mondal’s involvement in the illicit trade of banned substances from the northeast, facilitated through a courier company.

A case under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered at a local police station in Nadia district. Mondal, currently stationed at Naihati station, was caught receiving the contraband from a DTDC courier counter near Nasra Post Office. Despite attempting to flee on his scooter, he was swiftly apprehended by the STF team.

A senior STF official disclosed, “The arrested individual has been identified as a Group-D staff member in the Indian Railways, and has been involved in the trafficking of banned substances from the Northeast through parcel couriers for some years now.” Investigations are underway to dismantle the entire network involved.

Another official highlighted, “The seized opium, with an estimated market value of nearly Rs 90 lakh, underscores the scale of this illegal operation. The interrogation of the arrested individual aims to unravel the entire racket and unearth all potential links in this nefarious nexus.”
