Indian Actor to be Seen as German-Speaking Character in Austrian film

Indian-origin Austrian filmmaker Sandeep Kumar is directing a movie named “Happy” in which Mumbai-based actor Sahidur Rahman will be seen as a character who speaks German.

In this movie, Rahman plays the role of an illegal immigrant facing a deportation notice. “Happy” is about the protagonist’s relationship with his nine-year-old half-Austrian daughter.

Backed by the Austrian Film Commission, “Happy” also has dialogues in Hindi and English. It will have a theatrical release later this year.

Rahman is an alumnus of the National School of Drama, Delhi. He acted in Karan Tejpal’s “Stolen”, which was premiered at the 80th Venice Film Festival in 2023.

Sandeep Kumar’s last film was Mehrunisa. According to Kumar, Rahman is the lead actor of “Happy”. Rahman learnt the German language for four months for this film.

Kumar initially planned to make a documentary on illegal immigrants. But later he decided to make a feature film, when a large number of illegal immigrants were deported from Austria in 2023.

Sandeep Kumar’s “Mehrunisa” was screened at the International Film Festival of India Goa in 2021.
