Rare 360 Degree Fusion Surgery of Spine Performed Again in Sparsh Hospital, Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: A very rare spine surgery through 360-degree fusion surgery or Circumferential Fusion Surgery was performed again at Sparsh Hospital, Bhubaneswar, a leading health care provider in Odisha.

This very rare sine surgery saved the life of a 47-year-old male patient. Earlier in May 2022 the hospital was in the news for its innovative Spine Surgery.

According to the Sparsh Hospital authorities, a 47-year-old male developed weakness in his both hands and severe pain in his neck after falling from a tractor while carrying a heavy load on his head. After getting no relief by consulting 2-3 hospitals, the patient approached the Sparsh Hospitals, Bhubaneswar. He was seen by Dr Sanatan Satpathy (Sr Neuro & Spine Surgeon of Sparsh Healthcare) of the hospital.

A thorough examination by Dr Sanatan revealed that the cervical spine bone at C6 & C7 of the patient had been fractured and severely displaced leading to compression of nerves and the spinal cord.

Dr Sanatan planned for a 360-degree fusion surgery or Circumferential Fusion Surgery. He counselled the patient & his relatives about the high risks associated with this critical rare surgery like, paralysis of all 4 limbs, respiratory failure and cardiac arrest during or after surgery. Knowing all associated risk factors, the patient and his relatives consented to the surgery.

Dr Sanatan, who is a highly professional senior Neuro & Spine Surgeon along with a 12-member team performed this 360-degree fusion surgery that took about 7 hours. Dr Sanatan and his team first did this surgery from the back of the neck then changed the patient’s position and did the operation from the front side.

Dr Sanatan said, the 360 Degree Fusion Surgery is also called as Circumferential Fusion Surgery. In this method of surgery, spine operation is done in 2-3 phases. The 1st part of the surgery is done while the patient is positioned lying on the face and abdomen. His neck is opened from the back and screw-plated. Within the same sitting, 2nd part of surgery is done with the patient turned face and abdomen up and the cervical spine approached from the front of the neck in between critical parts of the body like the Trachea, Esophagus, Carotids and implant given.

This rare surgery is highly critical due to prolonged duration, chances of severe bleeding, additional spinal cord injury during repeated neck movement and chance of injury to important body organs like the Trachea, Esophagus, and carotids.

Dr Sanatan Satpathy is attached to Sparsh Healthcare since last one year. He is an experienced, sincere, compassionate and dedicated medical professional. He has the experience of more than 2000 brain and spine surgeries.

Saumendra N Mishra, General Manager-Administration & Business Development of Sparsh Hospitals expressed his gratitude towards the patient’s confidence and his doctor & colleague’s dedication to handling this rare case.

Dr Anuj Tiwari, the Group Chief Executive Officer at Sparsh Healthcare, said “This was really challenging case. The associated risk with this surgery is very common. But our doctor and team did it very accurately and the patient was saved. After the operation, the patient improved dramatically and discharged with good health. We are thankful to our doctors and all the staff for their contribution which strengthens the beliefs of people of Odisha. Here at Sparsh Hospitals, the Healing Touch Wins Always”.
