Army Gets Magisterial Power in Bangladesh Under Interim Govt

Bangladesh’s interim government has provided magisterial powers to the Army for two months to improve law and order in the country.

According to a notification of the Bangladesh Ministry of Public Administration on Tuesday, this decision for magisterial power for the Army will be applicable with immediate effect.

The commissioned officers of the Bangladesh Army will have magisterial powers for the next 60 days. These Army Officers will enjoy the status of special executive magistrates and they shall be subordinate to the district magistrates, or deputy commissioners, reported bdnews24.com.

This authority including arrest and dispersal of unlawful rallies has been conferred upon commissioned officers of the Army.

In self-defence and extreme need, the officer can open fire, said an adviser to the interim government on Tuesday, The Daily Star newspaper reported.
