Multiple Churches Vandalized in Pakistan Over Blasphemy Allegations

Islamabad: A mob vandalized multiple churches in Pakistan’s Jaranwala district on Wednesday over blasphemy allegations. The Salvation Army Church, United Presbyterian Church, Allied Foundation Church, and Shehroonwala Church were targeted. The house of a Christian cleaner accused of blasphemy was also demolished.

The police chief acknowledged the damage inflicted on the churches and said that efforts were underway to engage peace committees and maintain order. However, Christian leaders criticized the police for being passive observers in the face of the turmoil.

The incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by religious minorities in Pakistan. The population of minorities in the country has dwindled from 23% to 3% since independence in 1947. The introduction of blasphemy laws has been a major factor in this decline, as they have been used to target religious minorities, leading to loss of life and incarceration.

The Jaranwala incident is a grim reminder of the need for vigilance in protecting the rights and safety of religious minorities in Pakistan. The authorities must take steps to address the misuse of blasphemy laws and ensure that religious minorities can live in peace and security.
