Great Wall of China Damaged Beyond Repair By Workers Looking for Shortcut

Beijing: Two construction workers in central Shanxi province have been detained on suspicion of damaging a section of the Great Wall of China.

The workers, a 38-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman are accused of using an excavator to widen an existing cavity in the wall in order to create a shortcut for their construction project.

The damage was discovered on August 24th and is considered to be “irreversible”. The wall is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is of great historical and cultural significance.

The Beijing Times reported in 2016 that more than 30% of the Ming Great Wall had disappeared, with only 8% of it considered to be in good condition.

The authorities are working to repair the damage to the wall and are investigating the two workers.
