Imran Khan’s Arrest Ruled Illegal, Pakistan Supreme Court Orders Immediate Release

Islamabad: Pakistan’s Supreme Court has ordered the immediate release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, stating that his arrest by the country’s anti-graft agency was illegal. The arrest warrant against Imran Khan was issued by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in Rawalpindi on May 1, in connection with the Al-Qadir Trust case.

Following his arrest on Tuesday, his supporters stormed the Pakistan Army headquarters in Rawalpindi and the Corps Commander’s residence in Lahore, leading to violent clashes in several cities of Pakistan.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party filed a petition challenging the Islamabad High Court’s ruling that backed the arrest of Imran Khan. On Thursday, a three-member bench of Pakistan’s Supreme Court ordered the anti-corruption watchdog to bring the former prime minister as it heard his plea against his dramatic arrest in a graft case. The Supreme Court ruled that the arrest of Imran Khan was illegal and held that no one can be arrested from court premises. The court has also asked Imran Khan to appear before the Islamabad High Court on Friday.

Imran Khan’s arrest has sparked political unrest in Pakistan, with many of his supporters taking to the streets to protest against what they see as the government’s attempt to suppress opposition voices.

Imran Khan is the founder and chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, which is the main opposition party in the country. The case against him is related to the misuse of funds donated to the Al-Qadir Trust, which was established to provide aid to the needy. The trust is accused of embezzlement of funds, and Imran Khan has been accused of using the funds for personal gain.
