Jharkhand High Court Orders Rs 5 lakh Compensation for Tribal Who Suffered Police Torture

Ranchi: The Jharkhand High Court has ordered the payment of a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to Anil Singh, a tribal victim of police torture, reported The Telegraph. The compensation amount will be collected from the erring police officials.

The 42-year-old Anil Singh, a native of Kuku village in Barwadih block in Latehar district of Jharkhand, was allegedly beaten up in the Garu police station by the police station in-charge and two other policemen had on February 23, 2022. He was illegally restrained in the police station for three days and was subjected to inhuman physical and mental torture on the pretext of helping Maoists.

Jharkhand Janadhihar Mahasabha helped Anil Singh in his legal struggle.

“The Mahasabha demands that the guilty police officers be dismissed immediately, punitive action be taken against them and Anil Singh be given a compensation of Rs 10 lakhs instead of Rs 5 lakhs,” the Mahasabha statement said.

“The Jharkhand High Court has ordered compensation of ₹5 lakhs to Anil Singh to be paid by the state immediately, preferably within a period of two weeks. The court has also observed that since it is an admitted case that the petitioner was wrongly taken into custody and tortured, the amount should be recovered from the police officials who had taken him in custody and tortured. The recovery should be made within two months from the date of payment,” said Ranchi-based high court advocate Shailesh Poddar who had fought the case on behalf of Anil Singh, as reported by The Telegraph.
