Court Rebukes Pragya Thakur for Skipping Malegaon Blast Case Hearing

Mumbai: A special court in Mumbai has once again reprimanded BJP MP Pragya Thakur for her continued absence in hearings related to the 2008 Malegaon blast case, where she is the prime accused. Despite being granted bail on health grounds, Thakur’s repeated non-attendance has drawn criticism from the court, which observed that her absence is impeding the trial process.

Thakur, who has cited health reasons for her absence, has been directed by the court to provide a status report on her health condition by Monday, April 8. Notably, she had previously skipped court appearances, claiming to be hospitalized, yet was seen participating in public events on the same day.

The Malegaon blast occurred on September 29, 2008, resulting in the death of 10 individuals and injuring over 100 others. Thakur, along with six others, faces charges under the stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

In response to a bailable warrant issued against her on March 11, Thakur’s lawyer stated that her doctor had advised against travel due to dizziness. However, the court cancelled the warrant after Thakur appeared before it on March 22.

Despite being granted bail on health grounds, Thakur’s participation in recreational activities, such as cricket, basketball, and dancing, has raised questions regarding the legitimacy of her health claims.
