4 Killed As Firecrackers Stored For New Year Celebrations Explode In Chennai

Chennai: Four people, including an elderly woman, were killed in the Namakkal district of Tamil Nadu, on Saturday after firecrackers stored in their home accidentally caught fire, causing an explosion. Four others were also severely injured in the explosion. The blast also gravely injured five others.

Three of the injured were reportedly in critical condition when they were admitted to the Namakkal Government Medical College.

“It is not clear why Thillai Kumar (37), a licence holder, had stocked the firecrackers in his house. The incident happened around 4 AM. Thillai Kumar, his mother Selvi (57) and wife Priya (27) died instantly,” a senior police official was quoted saying.

Namakkal police are looking into what caused the explosion that happened in the morning. It should be mentioned that the state’s Namakkal, Sivakasi, and Virudhunagar regions produce close to 75% of the firecrackers produced in the nation.
