Four Districts Under Red Alert As TN Continues To Be Pummelled By Heavy Rains

Chennai: Heavy rains continue to lash several districts of Tamil Nadu causing waterlogging in numerous localities. In view of the hazardous conditions prevalent in the state, 27 districts have announced the closure of schools.

In a number of districts, including Chennai, Chengalpet, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and Villupuram, among others, a holiday was proclaimed for schools and colleges. The low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal off the coast of Sri Lanka has caused heavy rains in a few areas of Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and Chengalpet, resulting in a red alert from the IMD in the aforementioned districts.

The most recent forecast indicates that there is a chance of light to moderate rain, thunderstorms, and lightning over a number of locations, including Nilgiri, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Cuddalore, Erode, Villupuram, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Chennai, Madurai, and Kanyakumari.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the low-pressure area over the Southwest Bay of Bengal off the coast of Sri Lanka is still there, and it is anticipated to become more pronounced over the course of the next 24 hours.

It is highly likely to continue moving toward the coast of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry till the morning of November 12, the IMD added. For the next three days, heavy to extremely heavy rain is predicted in numerous areas of the state.

Since Thursday night, Puducherry has been pummelled by torrential rain. Due to the heavy rains, the territorial government ordered the closure of all schools and colleges in the Puducherry and Karaikal regions on Friday and Saturday.

For a number of southern states, including Kerala and Andhra Pradesh, an orange alert has been issued until Saturday, November 12.
