France & UK want UNSC Permanent Seat for India

Two key Veto members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), Britain and France want India to become a permanent member of the UNSC. Britain and France want the reconstruction of the UNSC. On Friday, France declared that it wanted creation of new permanent seats in the UNSC for countries like India, Germany, Brazil and Japan. Earlier UK had also made a similar demand in favour of India.

Addressing the annual debate of UNSC on Security Council reforms on Friday, France’s Deputy Representative to the UN, Nathalie Broadhurst Estival said, “France endorses the candidacy of Germany, Brazil, India, and Japan as permanent members for permanent seats.”

Earlier, Britain had also supported India’s claim for permanent membership in the UNSC. UK Ambassador to the UN Barbara Woodward had spoken in favour of India, Germany, Japan, and Brazil becoming permanent members of the UNSC.

During this debate discussions are being held to reconstitute and revitalize the 15-member UNSC to make it more transparent, inclusive, representative, and accountable to meet the needs of the changing world.
