Jamsetji Tata, the founder of the Tata Group, holds the title of the world’s most generous philanthropist, surpassing modern-day billionaires like Mukesh Ambani, Ratan Tata and Azim Premji.

According to the 2021 EdelGive Hurun Philanthropists of the Century report, Tata’s donations total US$102.4 billion (adjusted for inflation), far exceeding Bill and Melinda Gates’ US$74.6 billion.

Born on March 3, 1839, Jamsetji Tata is revered as the father of Indian industry. His visionary philanthropy, particularly in healthcare and education, established institutions that have transformed millions of lives. Founding the Tata Group in 1868, Tata laid the groundwork for India’s largest conglomerate, now spanning over 30 companies and 10 industries globally.

Philanthropy is a long-standing tradition within the Tata family, originating from their Zoroastrian Parsi roots in Gujarat. Jamsetji’s sons, Dorabji and Ratanji Tata upheld this legacy by driving both industrial growth and social initiatives, especially in education and healthcare.

Jamsetji Tata’s philanthropic efforts remain unmatched, although Azim Premji has made significant contributions with donations totalling around ₹1.76 lakh crore (US$22 billion). The Tata Group continues to prioritise social responsibility, setting a benchmark for corporate philanthropy in India.
