Joshimath Sinking: ISRO Report On Land Subsidence Goes Missing

New Delhi:  The Indian Space Research Organisation released satellite images of Joshimath showing that it sank 5.4 cm between December 27, 2022, and January 8, 2023. However, the report is now not available anymore.

The ISRO-NRSC report which had clearly shown the slow and rapid land subsidence in Joshimath since April 2022 is not available in the public domain.  When one clicks on www.nrsc.gov.in, it takes the user to ‘Not Found’ page.

On the basis of ISRO’s preliminary report, the Uttarakhand government is conducting rescue operations in danger-prone areas and the people in these areas are being shifted to safer places on priority.

The link to the pdf report is not working anymore. The report indicated the gravity of the situation in the holy town in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand.

The landslide debris on which the city was established has a low bearing capacity and experts have long warned that it cannot support a high rate of construction.

Increased construction, hydroelectric projects, and the widening of the National Highway have made the slopes highly unstable in the last couple of decades.
