Sudha Murty Advocates for Majuli as Premier Wedding Destination in Maiden Parliament Speech

New Delhi: In her inaugural speech in Parliament, renowned author and philanthropist Sudha Murty fervently called for Majuli, the world’s largest river island and a UNESCO heritage site in Assam, to be recognised as a premier wedding destination.

Nominated to the Rajya Sabha by President Murmu, Murty extolled Majuli’s tranquil beauty and rich cultural heritage, contrasting it with the extravagant weddings of celebrities like the Ambanis. She lamented that while international wedding destinations are highly sought after, Majuli remains unfamiliar to 90 percent of the population.

Murty urged Indians to embrace the island’s natural allure and vibrant culture, which includes Neo-Vaishnavite monasteries, traditional handicrafts, and indigenous festivals. Situated in the Brahmaputra River, Majuli is noted for its scenic landscapes and cultural significance, even earning a spot in the Guinness World Records.

Murty’s proposal challenges the trend of opulent weddings, advocating for celebrations that are rich in simplicity and cultural beauty. She pointed out that in another country, Majuli would undoubtedly be a top destination for weddings, entertainment, and recreation.
