Tamil Nadu Rains: Several Districts Under Red Alert, Educational Institutions Shut

Tamil Nadu: The governments of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry have announced that schools and institutions in many districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry will stay closed as torrential rainfall continues to cause havoc in South India.

The Tamil Nadu and Puducherry districts of Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kallakurichi, Salem, Vellore, Tirupattur, Ranipet, and Thiruvannamalai were put under a red alert on Friday by the Indian Metrological Department (IMD).

Further, schools and colleges will remain closed on Friday in Chennai, Kanchipuram, Thiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Ranipet, Vellore, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Villupuram, and Ariyalur.

The Ranippettai, Thiruvallur, Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Kallakkurichi, Cuddalore, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, and Sivagangai districts of Tamil Nadu have all received heavy rains

In addition, the Tamil Nadu district of Tiruvallur has been alerted with a red alert by the IMD.

A red signal could cause low-lying areas to become completely shut off from the mainland, catastrophic agricultural loss, tree uprooting, damage to formal and informal communities, etc.
