5-Year-Old Teghbir Singh Becomes Youngest Asian to Summit Mount Kilimanjaro

Five-year-old Teghbir Singh from Punjab’s Ropar has etched his name in history as the youngest Asian to summit Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa. The young mountaineer completed his remarkable ascent on August 23, reaching the Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres.

Teghbir shared his excitement, stating, “I knew my goal and achieved it. I took a photo at the peak with my father. Chanting ‘Wahe Guru’ during tough moments gave me strength to reach the top.”

The climb involved significant preparation to prevent altitude sickness. Despite facing extreme conditions with temperatures as low as -10°C, Teghbir successfully reached the summit. Following his climb, he was awarded a climbing certificate by the conservation commissioner of Tanzania National Parks.

Teghbir now shares the record for the youngest climber of Mount Kilimanjaro with Serbian Ognjen Živković, who achieved the feat on August 6, 2023.

His success is credited to his coach, Bikramjit Singh Ghuman, a retired handball coach, and his family. Teghbir’s father, Sukhinderdeep Singh, noted that Teghbir had been training for nearly a year, with a focus on cardiovascular health and lung capacity through regular treks and exercises.

The climb to Uhuru Peak involved daily treks of 8-10 km, with the team battling severe weather conditions and a snowstorm. After initially turning back due to bad weather, they succeeded on their second attempt.

In April, Teghbir completed the Mount Everest Base Camp trek. He is scheduled to return to India on August 30.
