VIT Founder & Chancellor Dr. G. Viswanathan Awarded Honorary Doctorate By US Varsity

Vellore: Dr. G. Viswanathan, Founder and Chancellor of Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), was recently awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree by the State University of New York (SUNY) during Binghamton University’s convocation ceremony in the USA.

The honorary doctorate was presented to Dr. Viswanathan by Binghamton University President Harvey Stenger in recognition of his significant contributions to international higher education.

“Chancellor Viswanathan has been a pioneer in expanding access to higher education in India and forming partnerships with institutions around the world,” President Stenger remarked.

The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Binghamton University Provost Donald Hall, Dean Prof. Srihari Krishnaswamy, Assembly Member Donna A. Luppardo, Senator Lea Webb, VIT Vice Presidents Sankar Viswanathan, Dr. Sekar Viswanathan, and Dr. G. V. Selvam, Assistant Vice President Kadhambari S. Viswanathan, and Dr. R. Seenivasan, Director of International Relations at VIT.

Following the convocation, a felicitation function for Dr. Viswanathan was held in Washington, D.C. Attendees included Kannan Srinivasan, Member of the Virginia House of Delegates, Dr. P. Karunakaran, Head of the Education Wing at the Indian Embassy in Washington, D.C., Bala Swaminathan, President of the Federation of Tamil Sangams in North America (FETNA), Balagan Arumugasamy, former President of FETNA, Dr. Veera Venugopal, President of the Tamil Nadu Foundation, Dr. Prabu David, Provost of Rochester Institute of Technology, Dr. Jeyachandran, former Senior Professor at Montclair State University, Dr. Sridevi Sarma, Vice Dean at Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Paneer Selvam, Senior Professor at the University of Arkansas, Dr. V. Raju, Provost of VIT Bangalore, and Mrs. Indirani Radhakrishnan, Advisor of the VIT Alumni Association in North America, alongside office bearers of VIT Alumni Association North American chapters.

It is noteworthy that Dr. Viswanathan had previously been honored with an honorary doctorate by West Virginia University, USA, in 2009.
