Death Toll Rises to 7 in Illegal Firecracker Factory Blast in West Bengal

Kolkata: The death toll has risen to seven following a tragic explosion at an illegal firecracker factory in the East Midnapore district of West Bengal, as confirmed by the police. The incident took place in Egra, where thick plumes of grey smoke billowed into the air after the explosion occurred.

Local residents quickly responded to the scene, providing assistance to those affected by the blast. The injured individuals were promptly transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

Authorities revealed that the factory had been subjected to a raid last month, resulting in actions being taken against its owner. Despite the crackdown, the production of firecrackers persisted within the premises, according to police sources.

The Bengal Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has assumed control of the investigation into the Egra explosion, which claimed the lives of seven individuals. In response to the tragedy, the state government has announced a compensation of Rs 2.5 lakh for the families of the deceased.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her dismay over the incident, revealing that the individual responsible for the accident had been previously arrested. However, after securing bail, the owner resumed the illegal operation.

“In Egra, an explosion has taken place. The area is located near the Odisha border. The factory owner was arrested earlier, and a chargesheet was filed against him. Unfortunately, he obtained bail and restarted his illegal business. The owner has now fled to Odisha,” Mamata Banerjee stated.

The authorities are diligently working to investigate the incident, ensuring that appropriate actions are taken against those responsible for the illegal activities that led to this tragic incident.
