Balasore: Eleven persons linked to the sand mafia were arrested in connection with the attack on Balasore Sub-Collector Kunal Motiram Chavan on Friday. The sub-collector was critically injured after the sand mining mafia attacked him while checking at Fuladi sand sairat near Sahadebkhunta police station.
On Friday night, police arrested two persons in relation to this case. Later on, nine others were arrested.
According to reports, the district administration seized several vehicles involved in illegal sand mining and transportation of sand on Thursday night from Fuladi. On Saturday, the Sub-Collector was on his way for inspection when he came across another vehicle transporting sand and intercepted it. After a few moments, a group of people said to be operatives of the sand mafia assembled there and allegedly attacked the Sub-Collector.
The Sub-Collector’s driver also faced the wrath of the mafia while trying to save the officials from the violent attack. Besides, the mafia also vandalized the excise department vehicle before fleeing the spot, reports said.
Soon after the injured Sub-Collector and the vehicle driver were admitted to Balasore Medical College and Hospital and are undergoing treatment.
Following the incident, police forces have been deployed in Fuladi. Meanwhile, SP Sagarika Nath reached the spot and carried out an investigation.
