Consumer Court Orders TV Company to Pay over Rs 2 Lakh to Customer

Jajpur: Following an order by an Odisha Consumer Court, a TV company will have to provide compensation of over Rs 2 lakh to a customer of Byasanagar in Odisha’s Jajpur district. The Consumer Court found that the company had delivered a defective product to the customer and also did not provide him proper after-sell service.

In 2016, a person named Vinod Behera of Mohan Villa in Byasanagar bought a 55-inch TV of a popular brand. It had cost him Rs 1.15 lakh. The TV had two years guarantee.

But after six months of purchase, this TV set developed technical snags. When the buyer contacted the customer care helpline of the company, the device was repaired.

But the same TV started showing technical problems from time to time. But the TV manufacturing company didn’t prefer to get the TV set repaired. When the company helpline did not repair his costly TV set, in August 2020, Vinod lodged a complaint in this connection with the Jajpur Road police. Following this police complaint, the company promised to provide him with a new TV in a month. But the company never replaced the defective TV bought by the customer.

At last Vinod approached the Consumer Court seeking compensation from the TV manufacturing company.

Hearing the petition, the court ordered the company to pay up Rs 1.15 lakh (price of the TV) with interest, Rs 1 lakh towards mental harassment and Rs 30,000 towards legal service expenses within a month.
