5.0 magnitude earthquake hits New Zealand’s Kermadec Islands

An earthquake of 5.0 magnitude on the Richter Scale occurred in the Kermedec Islands region of New Zealand on Saturday, reported United States Geological Survey (USGS).

According to information provided by the USGS, this earthquake was felt at 03:44:10 (UTC +05:30) at New Zealand’s Kermedec Islands on Saturday morning.

An earthquake of 7.1 magnitude had also jolted the Kermadec Islands region in New Zealand on March 16. According to the US Geological Survey, The quake was estimated at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles) USGS added. A tsunami warning was issued after the quake, the U.S. Tsunami Warning System said.

It is pertinent to mention that New Zealand is prone to earthquakes as it is located on the boundary of two of the world’s major tectonic plates – the Pacific Plate and the Australian Plate.
