Banarasi Paan & Langda Mango of Varanasi gets GI Tag

Varanasi: Banarasi paan and langda mango of Varanasi have received the Geographical Indication (GI) recognition. Along with them, on March 31, the GI Registry, Chennai, gave the GI tags to two more products of Uttar Pradesh, Ramnagar Bhanta (brinjal) and Chandausi’s adamchini chawal (rice). These products will now be identified by their origin.

The GI tag is a significant achievement for the people associated with their production and trade. All the four products that received the GI tag are related to agriculture and horticulture.

Over 20 lakh people are involved in the trade of the four products with an annual business of approximately Rs 25,500 crore. UP government had applied for GI tags for 20 products, and 11 products have received it.

Banarasi thandai, Banarasi lal peda, tirangi barfi and Banarasi lal bharwan lal mirch are also in the race for the GI tag.
