Brain Fever Detected in Odisha’s Soro; 5 Students Tested Positive

Soro: Brain fever is detected in Odisha’s Balasore district. Five students of Soro Kanyashram tested positive for suspected Japanese encephalitis or brain fever.

The case has come to the fore from Gandhi Seva Kanya Ashram located in Soro of Balasore.

“Samples of 25 students were tested and reports of 5 students came positive. They have been shifted to Balasore hospital. Other students do not have symptoms, but they are under observation,” said Balasore Assistant District Medical Officer (ADMO).

The girls had been admitted to Soro but have now been shifted to Balasore District Headquarters Hospital (DHH). Other students do not have symptoms, but shall be kept under observation.

In 2016, many children in Odisha’s Malkangiri district had been affected with brain fever and died.

The symptoms of brain fever are:

  • Sudden high fever.
  • Stiff neck.
  • Severe headache.
  • Nausea or vomiting.
  • Confusion or trouble concentrating.
  • Seizures.
  • Sleepiness or trouble waking.
  • Sensitivity to light

Till now, no medicine to treat viral Encephalitis is available. It is dangerous since the rapid speed with which the condition of the children worsens soon after the onset of the disease.
