CJI Constitutes All-Woman Bench of Supreme Court

New Delhi: An all-woman bench of the Supreme Court was constituted by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud on Thursday. This bench comprises Justices Hima Kohli and Bela M Trivedi. This bench will hear transfer petitions related to matrimonial disputes and bail matters.

Such an all-woman bench has been constituted by the Supreme Court for the third time in its history.

The new all-woman bench has 32 matters listed before it. They include 10 transfer petitions of marital disputes and 10 bail matters.

In 2013 the apex court formed its first all-woman bench. A similar bench was again constituted in 2018.

At present, the Supreme Court has three women judges. Apart from Justice Kohli and Justice Trivedi, the apex court also has Justice BV Nagarathna.

As per her seniority, Justice Nagarathna is expected to become the first woman Chief Justice of India in 2027.
