SC Starts Using AI for Live Transcription of its Hearings

New Delhi: In a first-of-its-kind foray into the use of modern technology, the Supreme Court of India launched the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Natural Language Processing technology for live transcription of its hearings on an experimental basis on Tuesday.

The live transcription experiment was started in the courtroom of Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud. From Tuesday, the proceedings of the Constitution bench will be transcribed live and given to lawyers for inspection before it is uploaded on the Supreme Court website.

The CJI-headed Constitution bench is hearing the case related to the 2022 power struggle in Maharashtra.

This will be on an experimental basis for a day or two, before it becomes a norm, the CJI said.

“Do you see the screen? We’re just trying to explore the possibilities of the live transcript. Then we will have a permanent record of arguments. Law colleges can analyze,” the bench headed by the CJI said as the Constitution bench hearing commenced.
