Death toll rises to 62 due to Winter Storm in North America

Washington: In the United States, the death toll rises to 62 as the North America severe winter storm drags on.

County Executive Mark Poloncarz has said that at least 34 people have died in Erie County, which also includes the city of Buffalo. While the largest death toll has been reported in New York, storm-related deaths have been reported across the US, including Vermont, Ohio, Missouri, Wisconsin, Kansas, and Colorado.

On Monday, US President Joe Biden approved an emergency declaration allowing federal support for New York State.

The neighbouring state of New Jersey also sent emergency services to New York state to provide further assistance. The Weather Prediction Center said the storm is expected to linger into the upcoming weekend.

It said, a surge of heavy rain or mountain snow is expected in the west and the US south today and could continue through the end of the week. Heavy snow is also forecast for the mountainous regions of Sierra Nevada, Cascades and the Rockies as moist air flows eastward, the Center added.
