Former Gunupur MLA Ramamurthy Gomango Convicted in Wife’s 28-Yr-Old Murder Case

Bhubaneswar: Former Gunupur MLA Ramamurthy Gomango has been convicted by the Special Court of Additional District Judge (ADJ-III) in Bhubaneswar for the murder of his wife, Sashi Rekha. The incident took place nearly 28 years ago in 1995. The court based its decision on the statements of 11 witnesses and 15 relevant documents pertaining to the case. The punishment for the convict will be announced on Tuesday, June 27.

The body of Gomango’s wife was discovered with severe burn injuries at their residence in the MLA Colony of the State Capital on August 29, 1995. Initially registered as an unnatural death case, it was later converted into a murder case by the Kharavel Nagar police station based on evidence found during the investigation. The victim was approximately five months pregnant at the time of the incident.

According to public prosecutor Rashmi Ranjan Brahma, Gomango initially claimed that his wife had committed suicide by burning herself in the bathroom. However, the investigating officer discovered evidence suggesting it was a case of murder, which occurred on Ganesh Chaturthi following a verbal altercation between the couple.

Gomango, who was elected from the Gunupur Assembly constituency in 1990 on the Janata Dal ticket, later joined the BJP in 2000 after leaving the Janata Dal. He won the Gunupur seat in the General Elections held the same year.
