New Delhi: Gitanjali Aiyar, who is remembered as one of India’s first English female news anchors on Doordarshan, breathed her last on Wednesday. She was in her mid-70s. She was suffering from Parklinson’s disease
After graduating from Kolkata’s Loreto College, Gitanjali Aiyar joined Doordarshan in 1971. She won the best anchor award four times and was also honoured with the Indira Gandhi Priyadarshini Award for Outstanding Women in 1989.
She was a diploma holder from the National School of Drama (NSD). She was seen in several print advertisements. She acted in popular TV serial “Khandaan”. She was also associated with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
Several noted personalities condoled her demise. She is survived by a son and daughter Pallavi Aiyar, who is also an award-winning journalist.
