Mumbai: Guru Dutt’s sister and well-known artist Lalita Lajmi breathed her last at the age of 90.

She was a self-taught artist and classical dancer, who rose to fame in the art world because of her unique creativity. She had a special appearance in Aamir Khan’s 2007 film ‘Taare Zameen Par’. In this movie, Aamir played the role of an art teacher. In the climax scene, Lalita Lajmi appeared as a judge of an art competition held in the residential school where the character played by Aamir Khan worked.

The Jehangir Nicholson Art Foundation took to social media to pass on the news about the sad demise of Lalita Lajmi.

Sharing an old picture of Lalita and her creation, the foundation wrote “We are deeply saddened by the news of artist Lalitha Lajmi’s passing away. Lajmi was a self-taught artist with a keen interest in classical dance. Her works had an element of melancholy and performance, as seen here in her artwork, ‘Dance of Life and Death’.”

Lajmi’s earlier works drew inspiration from her personal life and observations. Her later works were well known for their depiction of the hidden tension between men and women.

Her works were also influenced by the Indian films of her brother Guru Dutt, Satyajit Ray, and Raj Kapoor.
