Love Marriages More Prone to Divorces: Supreme Court

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday observed that most divorces arise from love marriages. This was stated by a bench of Justices BR Gavai and Sanjay Karol, while it was hearing a transfer petition arising out of a matrimonial dispute.

“Most divorces are arising from love marriages only,” said Justice Gavai when a lawyer in the case informed the Court that the marriage was a love marriage.

The husband in this case opposed a mediation suggested by the court. The bench said that in view of a recent judgment, it could grant a divorce without his consent.

Earlier this month, a five-judge Constitution bench headed by Justice SK Kaul the Supreme Court said that it can dissolve a marriage on the ground of “irretrievable breakdown”.
