‘Magic Sword’ Stuck in Stone for 1300 Yrs Vanishes in France

The Durandal, the ‘magic sword’ stuck in stone for over 1,300 years in the village of Rocamadour in France has mysteriously vanished and the French police are investigating to locate it, reported the Telegraph UK.

The sword was stolen on Monday. It was a major tourist attraction at Rocamadour. This ancient weapon was linked to a legendary character in French literature – the knight Roland, who was said to possess ‘an indestructible sword’.

Medieval legends claim that this ‘magical’ sword had been given to the knight by an angel. It is believed that the knight lodged the sword permanently in the rock to save it from approaching enemies. Myths say that the sword could cut through stone with one blow.

These magical qualities of the sword are mentioned in the 11th-century poems of the Song of Roland, the oldest surviving major work of French literature.

The sword lodged into a rock 100 feet above the ground, has been stolen by someone.

Police are surprised by the fact that someone managed to climb 100 feet on a cliff to pull out the sword embedded in stone.
