Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi sentenced to 7 years in prison by Myanmar Junta Court

A Myanmar military court on Friday sentenced ousted civilian leader and Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi to seven years in prison. She was convicted of corruption after a trial that continued for 18 months.

According to sources, Suu Kyi was convicted for alleged corruption related to the hiring, purchase and maintaining of a helicopter that had caused a “loss to the state”.

She is a prisoner in Myanmar since the 2021 military coup. The military regime has convicted her on every charge levelled against her, ranging from corruption to illegally possessing walkie-talkies and violating Covid restrictions.

Suu Kyi has till now spent 33 years in jail. Last week, the United Nations Security Council requested the Myanmar rulers to release Suu Kyi.

Myanmar is in political turmoil since the military seized power, ending its brief experiment with democracy under Suu Kyi.
