Prez, PM & BJP Leaders Pay Tribute to Mahatma on Gandhi Jayanti

New Delhi: On October 2, all leaders of political parties paid tribute to the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi on his birthday. They included leaders of the BJP, a party whose activists at times rail against Bapu and some even praise his killer Nathuram Godse.

Taking to X on Gandhi Jayanti, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote in Hindi, “On behalf of all countrymen, salutations to Pujya Bapu on his birth anniversary. His life and ideals based on truth, harmony and equality will always remain an inspiration for the countrymen.” he wrote in Hindi.

Modi also took part in “Swachhata related activities” to honour 10 years of Swachh Bharat, which was launched on Gandhi Jayanti in 2014.

President Droupadi Murmu attended Sarva Dharma Prarthana at Rajghat, New Delhi to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi on his 155th birth anniversary.

In the message released by the Rashtrapati Bhavan, she wrote, “Gandhiji took up the missions to eradicate untouchability, illiteracy, lack of sanitation and other social evils, and championed the cause of women empowerment relentlessly,”

“On this auspicious occasion, let us resolve to imbibe the values of truth, non-violence, love and purity and, with the idea of the India of Gandhiji’s dreams, strive to continuously advance the development of the country and society,” she added.

Yogi Adityanath also garlanded a statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Lucknow and wrote on X, “Salute to the memories of revered ‘Bapu’ who showed the path of upliftment and non-violence to the modern world!”

Remembering that on April 18, 1934, Gandhiji dedicated a ‘Naamghar’ or a prayer hall to the Harijans at Assam’s Jorhat, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote, “The Naamghar, belonged to Krishna Nath Sarmah, a Gandhian who worked for the upliftment of Harijans.” He also shared pictures of the historic day.

Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan garlanded the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Mananchira, Kozhikode and wrote on X, “My humble pranams to #MahatmaGandhi, whose political and social involvement was guided by profound spirituality. ‘To serve is my religion’, is what Gandhiji often said,” he added.
