In a startling claim, former Prime Minister of Britain Boris Johnson alleged that Russian President Vladimir Putin had threatened to target him personally with a missile attack just before Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
This was revealed in a new BBC documentary to be broadcast on Monday. At that time, Johnson and other Western leaders were on their way to Kyiv to show support for Ukraine and try to deter a Russian attack.
According to Johnson, he was threatened by Putin over phone. He said ‘Boris, I don’t want to hurt you, but with a missile, it would only take a minute’, or something like that,” Johnson quoted Putin as saying.
Johnson emerged as one of the most impassioned Western backers of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Putin was angry over Ukraine’s plans to join NATO.
On the missile threat, Johnson added: “I think from the very relaxed tone that he was taking, the sort of air of detachment that he seemed to have, he was just playing along with my attempts to get him to negotiate.”
The BBC documentary will show the rising tussle between the Russian President Putin and the West before the invasion of Ukraine. It also features Ukrainian Zelensky’s statement regarding his plans to join NATO prior to Russia’s attack.
