Rat’s Murder! UP Police Files 30-page Chargesheet Against Culprit

Lucknow: In an unbelievable incident, Uttar Pradesh police have filed a 30-page chargesheet against a man from Uttar Pradesh’s Badaun accusing him of murdering a rat by tying its tail to a brick and drowning it in a drain.

In November 2022, animal rights activist Vikendra Sharma filed a complaint before the police against the accused, Manoj Kumar Sharma along with video evidence. Sharma claimed that he had tried to save the rat but it died of suffocation. The activist sought action against the man for drowning a mouse in the presence of his children.

The 32-year-old man was also arrested following the complaint lodged against him. Later he was released on bail.

Now Badaun police has prepared a 30-page chargesheet against the man. The chargesheet includes the post-mortem report of the mouse, videos released in the media, opinions of the experts of different departments concerned. Accused Manoj Kumar is booked under Section 11 (1) (Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act) and Section 429 (killing or maiming animals) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Police sent the body of the rat for post-mortem to the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) in Bareilly. In the chargesheet, it has been clarified that the rat’s lungs were damaged due to swelling and there was a liver infection. Apart from this, it was also clarified in the microscopic examination that the rat’s death was caused due to suffocation.
